Shipton Lake

Brief description of fishery:

The Lake is situated on the York to Thirsk road approximately 8 miles from York, at Shipton-by-Beningbrough.

Shipton is a 4 acre lake, the site of an old brick-works clay pit, owned outright by BCAA since 1959.  It is surrounded by trees, with 23 fishing pegs – mainly platforms – provided for anglers. The water is very clear and rich in natural food, with blue dye currently being trialled to suppress weed and lily growth.

An otter fence was erected in 2018 to guard against predation. The gate is locked with a combination padlock.  Members can access the code from the rear of their membership card or within their personal membership section on the website. The code will be changed annually so please check..

Open for fishing:

Open all year round

Special Rules for this fishery:
1. All anglers must always close and lock the fishery gate after entering and leaving.
2. Members are allowed to surface fish Shipton Lake through out the year, providing they maintain a safe distance from the water lilies.  The Committee define a safe distance as to being between 5 to 10 meters away from the outer edge of the lilies.  The person surface fishing will be in attendance of the fishing equipment at all times.  Zig fishing will only be allowed between 1 November and 30 April.
Other remarks
Adult members may fish with two rods.  Juniors (members at nil cost) may also use a second rod if they hold a second rod permit, available from the General Secretary on 01274 684906.
Night Fishing is allowed for up to 4 anglers per night at this fishery, bookable online.
Any breaches of rules will be reported to the General Committee, which may decide on punitive action.
We will likely undertake Working Parties at this Fishery in the coming year. The fishery will NOT be closed on these dates, though work parties may temporarily impact on anglers’ access to and enjoyment of the fishing.
There are no toilet facilities at Shipton – Anglers should therefore plan accordingly, especially when intending to night fish.  If soiling of the grounds surrounding this fishery becomes a problem, then Night Permits may be withdrawn permanently.
